Senior Buyer/Planner

Job Summary: Responsible for handling the everyday purchasing of assigned products sold at Benco; balancing purchases with current inventory, keeping adequate supply of product without backorders and overstocks; working on inventory planning with all vendors. Sr. Buyer will serve as mentor for new hires and will take ownership of a key department metric.


Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business/Supply Chain or equivalent education/experience
  • Experience: Minimum of three Purchasing and Supply Chain experience.
  • Skills needed: General knowledge of principles and concepts of Purchasing. Ability to lead others, be approachable and unify. Expertise in ERP/ DRP systems. Ability to identify opportunities and implement solutions. Ability to communicate effectively; negotiation skills; computer, organizational, and decision-making skills; the ability to work independently or as part of a group; must be multitask oriented. Fair to good skill sets in Microsoft Excel.


Duties and Responsibilities:
• Effectively maintains stock inventories for all assigned vendors by maintaining yearly fill rate goals.
• Use DRP system daily to place orders, transfer and review MTD portals; both general and customer and/or TR specific portals.
• Increase product turns to meet company objectives.
• Monitor purchase orders by reviewing PO before submitting to Vendor, maintaining accurate delivery dates on all PO’s. Follow up on PO’s with past due delivery dates and expedite as required.
• Consistently processes vendor returns (overstock/slow moving inventory) to meet goals for each DC.
• Maintain Binwork requests for assigned vendors - answer and close out within 24 hours. If request can’t be closed for any reason, enter note in the “Binwork Discussion” section with a description of what is happening with the request with initials and a date. Follow up on these requests daily - with new notes explaining any changes in status.
• Approve A/P discrepancies daily. No A/P discrepancy should be open for longer than 3 days. If there is an issue and the request can’t be closed, add buyer notes explaining the hold-up.
• Once a month accurately review reports that help guide whether items should be moved from stock to non-stock and vise-versa. Anticipate product trends by working with marketing to decide which new products to stock and which to make non-stock because of a reduction sales.
• Weekly reports (B Supply Code, Old Open Transfers, 004 to 001 items and Old Open PO’s) to be worked on & completed each week.
• Be proactive to flyers and publications. Items in flyers should be reviewed to determine if they should be made stock in all DC’s before the publication starts.
• Check buyer queue regularly to manage work flow.
• Monitor/process work orders to ensure items are created in a timely manner.
• Attend training classes for assigned vendors as well as continuous improvement training, which will assist in performance of job functions.
• Provides clear communication to both internal and external associates and customers.
• Perform vendor follow up to include past due Purchase Orders and invoices when applicable.
• Consistently displays through actions and verbal communication, a “can do” attitude; reaching out to team members both within and external to department to positively affect continuous improvement initiatives.
• Mentors at least one Purchasing Agent in one “job task/skill area.”
• Is available for questions at all times.
• Support all PA’s as needed to ensure department goals are met.
• Trainer and lead “subject matter expert” for ERP and DRP systems.
• Liaison between PA’s and DRP projects; participate in ongoing meetings with DRP provider.
• Monitor “special” portals / reports for onboarding new accounts – review with team members as required.
• Owner of a minimum of one Purchasing metric (e.g. rebates, transfers, training, returns, past due po lines). Reports monthly performance vs. goal and works with PA’s to accomplish goal(s).
• Meet with Manager at least once per month to review projects, report metrics and provide feedback relative to PA performance, opportunities for improvement.
• Create work instructions/SOP’s as required relative to departmental tasks.
• International Ordering – understand process including air freight requirements.
• Demonstrates desire and ability to continuously learn and grow in a leadership role by attending minimum of one “leadership” or skill related training per quarter (as offered by Benco). Purchasing Manager and Director Supply Chain will assist in selection of appropriate training classes as needed.
• Possesses a high level of integrity and establish credibility with peers and management.
• Provide leadership by example, training and support as needed to all purchasing agents.
